I'm tempted to buy some more camera equipment, but objectively I'm not sure if there is really anything to get before the 5DIII body shows up, which will cost quite a bit and which will lead to a whole slew of expensive follow on purchases. I'm currently mostly tempted by the 1.4x extender, either in its II or III version, something that's been on the obvious list of purchases ever since I started out with getting the 70-200mm f/4 IS back in late 2007. It will be even more necessary once the 5DIII shows up, since I'll be moving from a crop to a full frame body, loosing 1.6x magnification. Just getting supertelephoto instead of the extender would be preferable, but none of the supertelephotos, besides a few old ones with old low performance IS, are even close to affordable...put it this way, they are not even in the close your eyes and stretch a bit category, rather they are in the a least five times as expensive as I've ever paid for any lens category, i.e. not equipment you buy for fun. A 1.4 extender, on the other hand, is a few hundred dollars, about the price of a cheap but decent lens.
The III version of the 1.4x extender is more expensive and mostly made for forthcoming lenses and the current new crop of extraordinarily expensive supertelephotos, so saving the money to go with the II version would make sense. On the other hand, I might eventually end up with a cheaper version of a supertelephoto at some point in the next ten years...might also be useful on the affordable non-IS 200mm f/2.8 L lens.
For now I'm buying a 58mm Nikon lens cap to replace the lens cap I seem to have lost/misplaced this weekend.
The Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM supertelephoto lens is $6,600. Getting to 280mm with the 1.4x extender on 70-200mm f/4 results in f/5.6, i.e. 1/4th as fast.
Update #1: Canon Rumors has the rumor that the forthcoming 24-70mm f/2.8 II, the obvious zoom to get with the 5DIII, is not going to be IS...I'd prefer IS for a fastish walking around normal zoom.
