I got and installed the Canon EF-S manual focusing screen today. As far as I can tell with only a bit of testing, the new screen does allow me to manually focus spot on, at least with the 17-55mm f/2.8 lens at 55mm and using the diopter and not wearing my glasses and with stationary well lit targets. I've not tried more challenging focusing tasts yet. Still, better than with the standard issue focusing screen.
If I can nail manual focusing this opens up the possibility of a range of high quality (and expensive) manual focus lenses...
