I was so unimpressively slow I thought I'd not even mention it here, but that didn't seem right either. I ran, not trying all that hard and starting behind a pulk throng of very eager kids, 5K in 22:06 min, which comes out to a 7:07 min/mile pace. #12 overall and #4 in the over 40 category. Six kids came in ahead of me, though I'd argue all of them looked like they had a decent amount of running exposure.
Goal for next year: get under 20 min (i.e. under 4 min/km, should be very doable). That would have gotten me #2 here. Time to try to step up my running to include 1-2 weekly runs at the 7 min/mile pace for 3 miles -- that where I was when my foot decided to act up and I've been very careful about not raising my pace above 8 min/mile since then. My foot feels fine now. We'll see where I am by next week, if my foot is still doing well then I'll try to step up the pace.
358 runners, but only 40 under a 8 min/mile pace.
Update #1: my wife points out that everybody who finished ahead of me started in the front group, unlike me.
Update #2: turns out 'pulk' isn't an English word. But it should be.
This time seems very fast to me. Do you listen to music while you run?
