Since we now have bike rack, I might as well get a bike. Advice is welcome. I've done very little research so far...I'm probably somewhere in the Trek FX 7.2-7.5 range. I know, a wide range.
The bike rack is actually a side issue, since I don't expect I'll do a lot of riding with the rest of the family. A bike for me is mostly to get out 1-2 times a week as an alternative to running. I've been using my wife's bike since 1993, but it isn't really the right size for me. Having two adult bikes might be a good thing as well.
Bike rack is immediately useful for getting all bikes except mine up to Massachusetts for the Summer.
I may give up on 'research' and just go for a 'good enough' impulse buy so I can get out there and bike. If I end up buying something else two years down the road, so be it. It is impossible to know now what I'll want in two years without the biking experience.
Update #1: at the moment I'm in the phase where reading reviews just makes me more confused/aware that I don't know anything, especially not enought to distinguish major issues from minor or fake issues. Reading more may not help right now...who knows enought to provide advice?
Update #2: I'm being sucked in by 'research', looking at Trek all the way up to FX 7.7, also Specialized Sirrus Pro. I want to know what's out there. I will take out my wife's bike to look at the near by trails to assess how sturdy the bike needs to be: I'll need to get to the bigger bike trails using these local trails. Some of the road bikes may not be sturdy enough.
