I've laid off on the bike shopping, waiting for my desires to become clearer and also just to have time and energy to go out to bike shops during the week (since I'm away in Massachusetts on weekends).
The currently most reasonable version of a new bike seems to be something like the Cannondale CAAD10 Ultegra. Up from there you get the CAAD10 Dura-Ace or the SuperSix Ultegra. CAAD10 is an aluminium frame, SuperSix is Carbon. I don't see going higher up in price like SuperSix Dura-Ace. I maybe should look at used bikes, especially in a area where there are lots of poeple selling high grade used bikes, but I'm weary of putting in the required time.
I'm also tempted by Power Meters...probably not for right now, but it would be fun to start out with one. Still, the cheapest is the wired version of PowerTap at $600 and it commits you to a wheelset (not an issue yet, but it would be if I start racing, not that this is a high probablility future).
