Image quality seems good, autofocus is slow with only a central AF point, especially in low light, i.e. as expected. More testing and calibration is called for. So I now have a 400mm f/5.6 lens (stacking it on the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II).
The big challenge here is going to be moving objects. Or why people pay for the supertelephoto lenses (the 400mm f/2.8 IS is $12K, the old 400mm f/5.6 non-IS is $1,200, the new 400mm f/4 IS is $6K...so my set-up is probably comparable to the old 400mm f/5.6, with IS though).
